Moving to Charleston can be an exciting prospect with many job openings right now. However, before moving here, you will want to consider several things, especially if this is your first time living outside of your hometown. The first question most people ask about Charleston is, “how expensive is it?”

This question can be a little tricky to answer because Charleston has many different sides to it. For example, if you live in the city center, it will cost considerably more than if you live in West Ashley. If you work at Boeing or in downtown commercial real estate, chances are you will pay more for rent–but then again, there is always room 21! The best way to determine what living in Charleston will cost you is to start searching for apartments and houses online and begin comparing them. The closer the homes are to downtown (like within walking distance), the higher the rent tends to be. There are many luxury complexes and new construction homes that are attractively priced.

Also, consider your lifestyle when deciding how much you’ll be paying. Are you looking for a great location within walking distance to the beach? Then you may want to spend more on rent and perhaps take out a mortgage. Or is your priority a place with great schools and low crime? Then it may make sense that you choose to save money on rent by staying in a less expensive part of town. As far as entertainment options in Charleston, there are plenty!

For the foodie, many of the restaurants have local fresh ingredients in their dishes. There are also plenty of great bars and places to enjoy some live music. The cost of living in Charleston is pretty high and that includes the rent that you can expect to pay. Additionally, it’s a good idea to have a home where you can entertain since many locals love throw-together dinner parties at their place or BBQs on their back porches. If you’re looking for affordable living, then the city center isn’t the best place for you–unless you are willing to pay for luxury living.

West Ashley is the best option for affordable living, and many consider it safer. Some areas in the city center are safe, but you need to be cautious of your surroundings. Additionally, there are many affordable neighborhoods outside the city center if you’re willing to commute. Charleston has an excellent school system, and many families relocate to West Ashley or the surrounding areas so their children will have great schools nearby.
